What is Kentucky Senate Bill 181 (SB 181)?
Kentucky Senate Bill 181 is a state law passed during the 2024 legislative session that sets new guidelines for electronic communications between public school employees, volunteers, and students. This law is designed to ensure that all digital communication such as, but not limited to, text messages, emails, messages on education platforms and others are conduced with transparency and oversight, promoting safety and accountability.
Why are families asked to fill out this form?
In accordance with SB 181, school districts are required to obtain written consent from parents or guardians before an approved employee or volunteer can communicate electronically with a student using a method of contact other than the District designated platform. This form allows parents and guardians to provide that consent, ensuring families are fully informed and involved in their students’ interactions with trusted adults in our school community. Without signed consent, staff and volunteers have limitations on how they may contact students for educational or extracurricular purposes.
Families please note:
It is important for families to understand that this written parental consent never authorizes an employee or volunteer to engage in inappropriate or sexual communication with a student. Such conduct is strictly prohibited by district policy and Kentucky state law, regardless of parental consent. Any violation will result in immediate disciplinary action and may be referred to legal authorities.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us comply with state law and ensuring safe, positive, and respectful communication between school staff, volunteers, and students.
